Cards to Dye For

In true re-cycle fashion, tie dying is back on trend! And it seems a bit more classy than the first time around, don’t you agree?

Naturally, Stampin’ Up! saw this coming and created the Spiral Dye stamp: It creates GROOVY backgrounds for cards (at 4-1/2″ x 5-3/4″, it covers a standard A2 size card front).

The COOL thing about this stamp is that when you spin the stamped image 180 degrees, you can stamp it a second time with another color and get the Tie-Dye effect! The Stamparatus tool makes it SUPER easy:

Looking at the spiral, it reminded my how often my “well-laid plans” get changed and I have to make adjustments. It happens to you, too, right? Learning to pivot and change directions is a skill that takes practice, but will help us learn to deal more smoothly with life’s unexpected challenges. Which is where I got the inspiration for this card:

Using Magenta Madness and Granny Apple Green as my colors, I stamped the Spiral Dye on a 4″ x 4″ piece of Basic White card stock, then used my trimmer to cut it into 6 random pieces before adding it to my card front. Demonstrators call it the “Scrappy Strip” technique.

To get a perfect edge around the word PIVOT (cut from the very versatile Playful Alphabet Dies), use an old fashioned compass drawing tool on the smallest width and lightly trace around the letters glued to white card stock with a sharp pencil. After fussy cutting, erase any leftover pencil marks.

The Lighthearted Lines had the perfect sentiments to go with it (PLOT TWIST!) and on the inside of the card I used another quote from the set:

Another Lighthearted Line sentiment that would have worked says, “When nothing goes right, go left”

Next I wanted to try embossing with the Spiral Dye and it worked out spectacularly:

It’s even more shiny in person!

Trendy Hanging House Plants

BLOOM WHERE YOU’RE PLANTED SUITE

I have early memories of my mother creating macramé and the trend of hanging house plants in these woven hangers has returned with fervor! You can enjoy this old-is-new-again fashion (without having to remember to water the plants) when you create with the Bloom Where You Are Planted Suite.

One cool feature of this suite is that the dies not only cut out the stamped images, but ALSO many of the printed images on the coordinating Designer Series Paper! If you need MORE of the patterned paper to pre-cut for projects, it’s on sale during our June DSP sale!

For this card, you can ink the right plant image with Calypso Coral ink, then stamp off once on scrap paper, but before stamping again on card stock use a sponge dauber inked with Old Olive ink to add highlights on edges of the leaves on the stamp, then press your image to the card stock and cut it out with the coordinating dies.

Too Cute to Resist!

I gave my Sprinkled Ink Team the challenge to create a project using a color palette including a 2021-2023 In Color and this is the card I came up with (because you can’t ask your team to do something you aren’t willing to do)!

You know I love to combine a few challenges, so I borrowed some inspiration from the Global Design Project “Case the Designer” theme this week, where Emma Goddard’s card was a great starting point:

I flipped the black & white vs colored strip around so I could teach how to do the emboss resist technique: It’s an easy WOW that makes any card irresistible (see what I did there?).

To do this, you simply need to emboss your image in white or clear embossing powder onto white card stock, then blend ink over your embossed images~ the embossed images resist the ink and appear magically!

Hats Off, Dad!

This is the time of year I make the most masculine cards. With Father’s Day coming up (and plenty of boy birthdays), I wanted to take the #TGIFC316 sketch and try it with the new Hats Off stamp set and dies.

The result was a card that reminds me of my both my father and father-in-love (a term borrowed from my friend Jan). What do you think?

Masculine cards don’t need a lot of embellishments, so once I figured out the width for the card stock strips, it didn’t take long to put together. They are all 4″ long and from the top, the widths are: 1/2″, 1-1/2″, 1″, 3/4″, 1/2″ and 3/4″. Choose any color combination you love, and I’ll put my supply list below if you want to copy it.

The stitching around the hat are from the dies and add just the right touch. TIP: Adhere your vellum to the card under the hat and you won’t see the adhesive showing through.

I think you’ll find plenty of occasions to use this very versatile hat, so order it in time to put it to use for Father’s Day!

New Stampin’ Year, NEW IN COLORS! Welcome to our May 2021 New at SU! Blog Hop where we are sharing the 2021-2023 In Colors with you in a fresh new way: by sharing Fun Fold Cards to try in your own craft studio! You’ll want to PIN all these terrific card ideas, so let’s get hopping around the world with our design team so you can give it a try sooner than later!

I chose to focus on the Pale Papaya color because it happens to match my favorite Designer Series Paper, “You’re a Peach” and I started with the In Color Vellum – which is shimmery on one side, and oh, so pretty!

On to my project, a Vellum Slide-Out-Pocket gift card holder:

My card was inspired by fellow demonstrator Rachel Tessman

What a PEACHY way to give a gift card!

Here are the pieces you need to make this card:

Pale Papaya Vellum: 11″ x 4-1/4″ scored at 2-1/4 from one end and 3-1/4″ from the opposite end.
Designer Series Paper: 7-3/8″ x 3-1/2″. If your paper has a direction, you’ll want to score at 2-5/8″ from the top (so your pattern will go the correct way on the pocket) and 3/8″ from the bottom. When you assemble the pocket, the 3/8″ edge will actually adhere toward the top of the card (see image 3)
Basic White card stock: 3-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ plus scraps to stamp on
Pear Pizzazz card stock: 3-3/8″ x 2-3/8″
Pale Papaya ribbon: 18″

I embossed the Pear Pizzazz card stock with the lovely Stitched Greenery die, then stamped and die cut my peach images (TIP: Ink up your peach stamp with Pale Papaya ink, then use a sponge dauber to lightly add a bit of Polished Pink ink to the edges)

Then follow these steps to assemble your card:

There is only Tear & Tape adhesive on the edges of the Designer Series Paper pocket and the 3/8″ top edge of the pocket, and then on the same spot on TOP of the vellum to adhere the card stock panel to the front of the card. No other adhesive is necessary!

I stamped “Happy BIrthday” on the back side of the front panel before assembling the card so it shows through when you open it.

Enjoy the Moment

Sometimes you don’t “see” a stamp set until you begin to work with it: That was the case when I first received the Enjoy the Moment stamp set from Stampin’ Up! for attending a virtual event. TBH, I looked at it and thought “It’s kind of ugly”.

Undeterred, I set out to make myself use it, and to my surprise, I found that the botanical images were absolutely attractive when used with a variety of techniques! My first favorite was embossing in white on Crumb Cake card stock. Pull out your Rectangle Stitched Dies to make a collage of the images and add a linen thread bow for a bit of dimension.

Next I tried a fun fold card style that I saw demonstrated during aforementioned virtual event:

I think the colors really made this card spectacular: Merry Merlot, a rich burgundy color paired with Vanilla and Sahara Sand (a color I don’t use as often) just FEELS like it was the palette to make this birthday card truly terrific.

Finally, this Monochromatic card came together in mere seconds, starting with a leftover scrap from the last card:

Isn’t that Ladybug trinket just the CUTEST detail? While the card was super simple, an accessory (just like a good pair of earrings) can transform a project!

I’m seeing the Enjoy the Moment set in a brand new light and hope you do, too.
