Ultimate Shabby Chic: Torn Paper

Celebrating the 500th TGIF Challenge with a birthday card I made for a dear friend, and my longest team member. Ann, if you see this, just act surprised when you open your mail!

Tearing – or ripping – paper was one of the first techniques I remember being taught at an EARLY crafting convention I attended. It’s so simple, and adds terrific texture, and while many things have changed in paper crafting styles, this technique has just grown more sophisticated.

To be honest, there were a few times I almost threw out this card to begin again, but I persevered, and surprisingly, I think the end result is “tres shabby chic”!

With a whopping 6 (or more) layers of card stock, Designer Series Paper, ribbon, and the birds (also die cut from the patterned paper, so I didn’t have to color them), this was much more detailed than I usually do, but the card needed all the fussy stuff, and Ann deserves a very special card.

Luckily, most of the elements came from the Nests of Winter Suite, so all I had to add was the pretty pompom ribbon. These items can also be ordered individually, which I will include in the supply list below.

Added a few more torn patterns to the inside of the card and the envelope!

Next time you are crafting, give Torn Paper a try. #tgifc500

Winterly Tree Tops 3D Frame Card with birds for a friend, Stampin' Up!

Mail this 3-D Frame Card

…to a friend who will display it proudly!

Because the October Paper Pumpkin kit coordinates with the Nests of Winter Suite, I wanted to show a card using those products that pops out of the envelope to create a stand-up 3-D frame:

This was a pretty simple card to create, and if you dislike fussy cutting (as I did with the birds from the Designer Series Paper), you could use the coordinating dies to cut different birds out for the inside.

Here’s the video tutorial to follow along:

Add a panel to the back of the card for writing your message, and remember, #nonakedenvelopes

If you love this project, DON’T MISS THE “Nests of Christmas” craft kit in the mail! You must subscribe by October 10th in order to receive this kit, and new subscribers can use code HOLIDAY40 to save 40% off their first kit!

The stamp set from the Kit will work perfectly with the Suite from the mini catalog (which we used today). When you purchase Stampin’ Up! products from your demonstrator, you support a small business, PLUS keep artists creating beautiful crafting supplies for you to enjoy~ THANK YOU.

Paper Crafts with ZEST!

The frame die from the Citrus Blooms bundle offers such versatility when you are considering summery cards or gifts, and in my Live Crafting broadcast today, I couldn’t stop with just one project.

The first card I demonstrated was the elegant “gate-fold” card, which opens to reveal a simple branch of mouth-watering fruit. For once in my career, I DIDN’T add a sentiment to this card! It seems like it could be used for any reason, so I left the options open.

The measurements for this gatefold card are:

  • Night of Navy Mat: 5.5″ x 4.25″
  • Basic White card stock: 4″ x 10.5″, scored at 5.25″
  • Designer Series Paper for gate flaps: 5.5″ x 5″, folded in half at 2.5″
  • A piece of Designer Series Paper to die- or fussy-cut your preferred citrus from
  • 22″ Navy & Gold Glimmer ribbon

While I didn’t demonstrate the second card, I’ll show you how to cut the larger navy layer from the frame using a 4.25″ x 5.5″ piece of card stock in the short video below.

Finally, when I found the Lemon Crisp Kit Kat candies, I knew I needed to make a favor (before I ate them all and regretted my life choices).

Measurements for this project:

  • Cut the frame from a 4″ x 5.5″ piece of Designer Series Paper, then score it at 2-1/8″ and 3″ in the center.
  • Night of Navy card stock 2-7/8″ x 4.5″, scored on all four sides at 1″ to create the “box” that holds two candies inside.
  • Navy 1″ x 8.5″ for the band around the outside (you’ll cut off the excess on the top after wrapping it)
  • Ribbon- as long as you want (tie a knot or a bow)

Now you have all the pieces prepared (right?), watch HOW to make each of these projects:

Spiral Pop-Up Cards, Valentine Edition

Crafter problems: Losing sleep over a project that you’ve dreamed up! That was the situation last night because I was too excited about making this idea come to life:

But I’m getting ahead of myself…

This simple pop-up card uses WINDOW sheets (spiralized) to make the bees buzz with a message of love on Valentine’s Day! The front of the card:

I actually made TWO versions with the Bee My Valentine suite AND a Sale-a-Bration specialty paper (which I’ll show you after the video). They are very easy to create and will be buzz-worthy when my grandkids open them!

Here’s the tutorial video:

One side of the paper is Flirty Flamingo and Real Red and the other side is white and GOLD FOIL, which will be perfect to have on hand for wedding season and anniversaries.

When you checkout from my Stampin’ Store, you’ll be prompted to choose Sale-a-Bration product(s) you qualify for! Here’s a cart I’ve started for you (add or take out, as you wish):

New at SU! Fresh as a Daisy Suite

Reminiscing with one of my long-time team members and remembering how 35 years ago, most rubber stamps were sold individually, which made it a challenge to find coordinating styles, sentiments and images to match. Having SETS of stamps (with coordinating dies, punches, patterned paper and/or accessories) in a SUITE of products really gives crafters the tools they need for boundless creativity!

The global New at SU! design team is putting the spotlight on our Suite collections in the Annual Catalog for our August Blog Hop, and my suite is “Fresh as a Daisy”

This is a tall slimline tri-fold Z card that fits into a legal envelope and is made easily with a piece of 8.5″ x 10-7/8″ card stock.

Score at 3-5/8″ and 7-1/4″ along the long side.

Make a pencil mark at 4.5″ on the left (short) side, then use paper trimmer to cut from top right corner diagonally to the pencil mark on the opposite side (or vice versa).

From a piece of 10.5″ x 8-1/4″, cut into three tall panels, each 3.5″ wide, plus one 7″ x 3.5″ piece of white card stock.

Hold the Designer Series Paper about 1/4″ above the bottom edge of the section you want to adhere it to and cut off the top diagonally from the back (see below). One piece will go on the opposite side of the white card stock section (see above), so it shows from the front when folded.

I kept the die cuts simple (no layers) and sponged the centers with Copper Clay ink, but you can create flowers in so many ways with this Suite by stamping, layering, embossing and die cutting!

Remember to stamp your envelope too! #nonakedenvelopes

I’ll list the supplies needed to create this card below the Hop list, and remember to pin this post to your Pinterest board to remember for the future!

Rain or Shine- a Fancy Fun-Fold Card

Faux (pronounced FO) means “an imitation” and in my own way of thinking, it also means “a better idea than the original”. This is certainly true of this unique card fold, because this “fake” version is so much easier than the one with a lot of tricky cuts and scores!

While I used the Rain or Shine suite for my card, I look forward to seeing how YOU use this easy tutorial:

Did you catch that the February Paper Pumpkin craft-kit-in-the-mail “Sunshine & Smiles” coordinates with the “Rain or Shine” Suite that is full of the cutest critters? Make sure you are subscribed by February 10th for this kit that will create 9 radiant cards with a peek-through component!

PLUS, there is a coordinating add-on die duo you can pre-order for the February Paper Pumpkin kit…while supplies last:

Ride On Birthday Card

Often I am pleasantly surprised by a suite of Stampin’ Up! products that I didn’t expect to love. The Ready to Ride Suite is a perfect example!

While my single motorcycle riding experience didn’t endear me to riding the big bikes, I can see where the wind-in-your-hair-open-road-big-sky kind of day could be very appealing. This collection of products: Legendary Ride stamps and coordinating Dies, Metal Plat Embossing Folder and most spectacularly, the Ready to Ride 12″ x 12″ Designer Series Paper…all come together in SUCH an AWESOME way for some revved-up greeting cards like this one I demonstrated today:

There are a few tricks I wanted to show you about easily cutting and adhering the pieces to create a very detailed motorcycle…and the video begins with an unboxing of a LIMITED EDITION Boho Blue Mini Cut & Emboss Machine (with details on how you can get it!):

To help you put it together, I made this Motorcycle piece guide. You can change colors and “chrome” as desired…on my card, I used the gunmetal silver foil sheet and the bright silver is shown below. Feel free to print off the picture and slide it into your die envelope or stamp case to refer to when building your bike!

If you are “Ready to Ride”…these are the supplies you’ll need:

Christmas Choo-Choo Card + October Announcements

This week’s TGIF Challenge #tgifc388 was a tricky one indeed! A card WITHOUT a sentiment?! Who does that?

I couldn’t even wrap my head around it, until I found a loophole: No sentiment…on the FRONT.

Inspired by a project my friend Sue designed for our Fall StampFest, I pulled out the SANTA EXPRESS suite and die cut images from the Designer Series Paper to follow my “train” of thought:

See? No sentiment! Even the signpost has stars instead of words.

But untie the top and extend it out and the rest of the idea follows:

NOW we are cooking with coal! Isn’t that adorable? The only thing I did stamp was the sentiment, then punched it out with the Label Me Lovely punch and attached them all with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

Some folks like to create cards without a sentiment on the front so they may add the appropriate words when they need to use it. For me, it’s like singing a familiar song and STOPPING just before the last word! The suspense just *hangs* in the air until the final note is sung.

Hopefully, this card meets the requirements AND finishes the last note, once opened. I’ve listed the supplies after the announcements.

HEY! If you read all the way through on the day this post was published (Tuesday, October 4th), I’ve got one more surprise for you: FREE SHIPPING on orders over $75 today only! The tutorial below shows a soft and sweet alternate to the colors highlighted in the Simply Elegant Suite. Here’s to a CRAFTY NEW YEAR!

5) Stamp greeting on 2″ x 1/2″ Mint Macaron cardstock with Mint Macaron ink. Adhere to tag with Stampin’ SEAL or Mini Glue Dots.

TIPS: Stampin’ Up! DistINKtive stamps are designed to give a detailed, shaded, 3D-like effect. An ink pad with too much ink will create a blotchy, blobby image with these stamps. This is a real case of less is more. Use a Bone Folder or the back of a plastic spoon to push the ink away from the center of the ink pad and towards the edges. Then ink and stamp.
